You're Not Good Enough

You're not thin enough.

You're not smart enough.

You don't have enough money.

You're not tan enough.

You're not blonde enough.

Your breasts are too small.

Your teeth aren't white enough.

This is the message the advertising media is sending. And the public is eating it up.

How else could Subway make a guy famous who wears pants that are twice as big as he is and make him do commercials for a decade?

How else could all these gyms and tanning salons and plastic surgeons and diet programs be thriving like they are?

They're preying on your insecurities.

And they know that regardless of how many of these insecure areas you try to improve, you'll keep spending money on anything they throw at you.

It seems like most of these insecurities come from the widespread use of mirrors. Every week on the news there are exposes about how department store mirrors distort how you look so that you'll decide to purchase a garment that isn't flattering. I personally blame the lighting, but the reporters are always pointing at the mirrors.

If we didn't have mirrors, would anyone really be so insecure that they'd let a doctor open up a skin flap and introduce a foreign object filled with jelly for them to lug around for the rest of her life?

Or to be convinced that if she's got curly hair, it's gotta be straightened? And if she's got straight hair, it's gotta be curly? Or if it's brown, it's gotta be blond? Or if it's black, it should be purple with blond streaks and brown roots?

And seriously? Are you putting bleach in your mouth?

I'm not bleaching my teeth. I like them the way they are.

I'm not bombarding my skin with cancerous UV rays; I'll just burn and come out pink after two weeks.

I'm not dying or straighting my hair; it couldn't possibly look more ridiculous than what nature provided me with.

I'm not going on a diet. My weight is fine where it is.

I'm not going to start working out. I'm lazy and it's against my religion. Of laziness.

If everyone did what the advertising media told us, we'd all look exactly the same.

Your teeth are burning my retinas!

And trust me, it won't be pretty.
