He Who Smelt It...

Kids have been saying it for years.

It's the best way to transfer blame for smelling up any confined spaces by passing gas.

But I never really stopped to think about what it was actually implying.

He who smelt it dealt it!

What? If the first person who smells the unpleasantness first and makes note of it (generally in the accusatory "Who farted?") is by law the one who "dealt it", why would the perpetrator call notice to the change in atmospheric composition?

They wouldn't.

In fact, the retort to this rhyming accusation would actually be the most truthful consequence.

He who denied it supplied it!

No, I didn't do it. That's gross, dude.

Guilty. Case closed.
